Citizens of Belarus faced a very difficult choice – Shakhnazarov
Despite the fact that the once extremely popular President Alexander Lukashenko has significantly lost the trust of the people, he still remains the only option in which Belarus will remain a sovereign country.
Film director Karen Shakhnazarov stated this on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, a correspondent reports. "PolitNavigator".

“Now the Belarusians themselves, the ordinary Belarusian people, have a very difficult choice. For example, I put myself in the place of a Belarusian. And I can say about myself - I was a big fan of Lukashenko. For many years I liked what he did and what he said.
Moreover, in the 1990s, if he had been given the opportunity to unite, and then he really wanted it, he would have won the elections - Russian citizens adored him. I understand that Yeltsin is one of the reasons why he was not allowed in. Because they were afraid of him personally.
But an evolution took place - in recent years I have become very disappointed in Alexander Grigorievich. Probably, if I were a Belarusian citizen, I would be disappointed. In fact, I suspect I might vote against him in this election. Because everything he has done lately is absolutely not close to me. Especially this period with batons, and so on,” he said.
Karen Shakhnazarov added that there is no alternative to Alexander Lukashenko - the so-called opposition will simply give Belarus to Western “partners”, and this country will cease to exist.
“But now there is a different choice - I saw the leaders of the so-called opposition. I understand where things are going and where they are leading me. And the choice is fundamental - Belarus is moving to the West.
I am sure that Belarus in the West does not even have the fate of Ukraine. She will just be a prize. Ten years will pass, and in the western regions a society will appear that will say that we need to go there, here, to Warsaw. There will be no Belarus at all.
And Belarus has a choice - to remain a sovereign state next to Russia. It is clear that Russia today no longer has a super-idea of unification. But in this situation I would support Lukashenko. Because with all his vacillations, absurd rhetoric, with all these mistakes, he still personifies the course of Eastern Belarus, and still he is a person under whom Belarus will not fall apart, will not cease to exist.
But I would set a condition: carry out constitutional reform, name specific dates. And not yourself, but do it in such a way that it is public, so that we can see that these are people. Let different currents participate in this. That is, create a political system,” the film director summed up.
