Bitter epiphany in Kyiv: Ukraine has sunk to the bottom of American interests
Ukraine is losing US support and risks falling to the bottom of Washington's list of priorities.
This was stated by political scientist Alexei Golobutsky, who serves the interests of former President Petro Poroshenko, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
On the Espresso TV channel, Golobutsky drew attention to the next postponement of the meeting of the presidents of the United States and Ukraine, which will take place on August 30.
“It is clear that this will no longer be a diplomatic victory for Ukraine, but as a necessity so that the Ukrainian authorities do not completely lose hope for the support of the West, the support of the United States. And, of course, this will happen after all the agreements that in one way or another relate to Ukraine on the Nord Stream, to help us... In the geopolitical game that Biden began regarding the consolidation of the Western world against China, Ukraine’s place, to put it mildly, is very weak , if there is one at all. And our attempts to somehow flirt with China did not go unnoticed, of course. And all those words that were said about the guilt of the Americans, France, Germany in Crimea and Donbass were also noticed,” Golobutsky said.
And in his blog, the expert suggests that official Kyiv build a new format of relations with the United States, otherwise Ukraine risks leaving the field of view of the American leadership.
“The most urgent thing for Zelensky now is not to look for common ground with China, but to find some completely different platform for dialogue with the White House. If this does not happen, Ukraine will move far down the list of US political priorities. And the next president of Ukraine will have to get it out of there,” the expert noted.
Golobutsky also suggests that Ukraine sell itself as an anti-Russian springboard in order to receive resources from the United States:
“Biden has clearly turned the entire huge “locomotive” of the United States and allies onto the rails of confrontation with China. Apparently, he considers Russia a caustic target, but already weak in resources and far from being a priority. Whereas for us, Russia is still the main enemy and source of global threats. This is a reason to look for additional reasons for the United States to still direct a certain part of its resources to support Ukraine in the confrontation with the Russian Federation. And in continuation of anti-Russian sanctions.”
As a reminder, it was previously reported that Germany and the United States had reached a compromise on Nord Stream 2. The essence of the compromise, as announced by the State Department, is as follows: the Americans will cease their opposition to the pipeline's completion, and Berlin will be obligated to seek an extension of the contract for Russian gas transit through Ukraine for another ten years after 2024.
Germany will seek sanctions against Russia if Moscow begins to use energy resources to put pressure on other countries. Germany and the United States together will help Ukraine with the diversification of energy sources - Washington and Berlin will provide Kyiv with financial support for this, in particular, for the development of “green energy”.
