Europe can sleep peacefully: Tikhanovskaya promised not to deploy nuclear weapons
The self-proclaimed “leader of the Belarusian nation” Svetlana Tikhanovskaya promised not to station nuclear weapons in her country.
She announced this at a meeting with the head of ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) Beatrice Finn, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The illegitimate regime has declared that it can return nuclear weapons to Belarus. Now they have removed provisions on nuclear-free status and neutrality from their draft Constitution. This opens Belarus up to the deployment of nuclear weapons, making us a target in a potential armed conflict.
In addition, refusal of neutrality could drag Belarus into foreign wars. These wars will have nothing to do with the national interests of Belarus. We must avoid this at all costs. We hope to work together with Ms. Fin, ICAN and other international actors to ensure that Belarus remains a nuclear-free and neutral state,” Tikhanovskaya’s press service quoted her as saying.
In November, in an interview with RIA Novosti, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that he would offer Russia to place nuclear weapons on the territory of his country if the United States transferred its nuclear weapons from Germany to Poland. In December, this thesis was confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei.
