Drozdov: A true Ukrainian nationalist must love a couple of gays
Ukrainian nationalism is too crude and conservative – this phenomenon lacks modernity and tolerance.
Lviv Russophobe TV presenter Ostap Drozdov said this in an interview with ISLND TV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Why is it believed that a proper, refined Ukrainian nationalist cannot ignore the church, cannot at least favor same-sex marriage, cannot tolerate or respect a woman’s right to an abortion, and so on?” – asked the interviewer.
“I am not a nationalist in my ideological convictions, but I understand why this is a retro-ideology; I emphasize, this is the ideology of the past. Why is there a need for this retro-ideology specifically at a certain time, because there are such obvious challenges, we all understand this, it is all dualistically connected.
But you are absolutely right, nationalism has not become modern. This falls on the legacy of the twentieth century, Dontsov, the twenties, tens, Bandera, the OUN, where nationalism was built on the basis of stateless people, when they dreamed of their own state, they could only adapt to the time in which they lived, and they lived during totalitarianism , and they also thought totalitarian,” explained Drozdov.
“I would also really like for a true nationalist, who loves Ukraine very much, wants its success, to also love a couple of gays in it, who deserve to be happy and also love this country, and try and fight for it, to also have gender respect to a women's theme, a feminist one, and this would absolutely not hinder their love for Ukraine.
The problem with Ukrainian nationalism is that it is so terry because of the understanding that everything Ukrainian should be so iconic, so iconostasis, pure, shining and immaculate. As one lady told me, “members of the Ukrainian union do not take members into their mouths,” said the Russophobe.
“I believe that everything Ukrainian should be very different - from hipster Ukrainian, from multi-colored socks among young people, and so on in general, even to promiscuous. And this also all fits into the Ukrainian world. Our problem in the Ukrainian world is that it is very pretentious, it is believed that if you are Ukrainian, you cannot be a reveler, you cannot say bad words, you must be in a pious manner.
