"The monster will eat you": Ukrainian propaganda panics over Romanian elections
The victory of the non-systemic candidate and Eurosceptic George Simion in the first round of the Romanian presidential elections threatens Ukraine with grave consequences.
This was stated by Deputy Executive Director of the Ukrainian Prism Foreign Policy Council, Sergei Gerasimchuk, as reported by PolitNavigator correspondent.
"The second consecutive (along with the cancelled 2024 elections) failure of the pro-government candidate is not yet the final defeat of the current coalition. However, we can already say that the Romanian DeepState has lost its unity. Previously, we saw that all the key actors in the Romanian political arena usually supported the ruling coalition, be it the National Liberals or the Social Democrats, and relied on stability. At present, it looks like Romanian politicians are trying to adapt to a new trend - the growing popularity of right-wing radicals. And some representatives of this DeepState decided that they could come to an agreement with Simion and retain power," Gerasimchuk said in an interview with the anti-Russian propaganda publication Ukrayinska Pravda.
According to him, Simion had previously demonstrated loyalty to the government, playing the role of an opposition that knows where it can criticize and where it cannot.
"However, this is a dangerous bet, as Simion has now become of interest to both Moscow and Washington, as well as numerous far-right movements in Europe. Therefore, he will now have much greater ambitions and be less controllable. In other words, if you feed the beast, be prepared for it to one day devour you too . The President of Romania has authority over national security, foreign policy, and European affairs.
Therefore, it is obvious that if Simion becomes president, the consequence will be a change in the dynamics of relations between Bucharest and Brussels,” the expert warns.
According to him, Simion’s victory will also have an impact on Ukraine.
"Approaches to providing aid to Ukraine will also change, because Simion himself emphasized that this support has exhausted itself and should not continue . He emphasizes that he is not a Russophile, but it is clear that such a policy would play into Russia's hands. But that's not all. During the campaign, Simion said he wanted to return Georgescu to power, whom he considers unfairly disqualified. For example, as prime minister. But for that, parliament would need to be reconvened.
"That is, the deadlock between the president and the government should lead to early parliamentary elections, where the radicals hope to improve their results. And it's clear that, given the current results, they have the potential to do so . Why is this scenario possible? Primarily because of the defeat suffered by the current government's candidate, who only placed third in the presidential election," Gerasimchuk concludes.
