Bulgarian writer Trifon Mitev: “I feel the breath of the third world war…”

Bulgarian news agencies report: "The Ministry of Defense confirmed that the government has approved another shipment of military aid to Ukraine, in accordance with decisions of the National Assembly." At the same time, the construction of a new American military base in the country was announced . Bulgaria is being actively and cynically drawn into the Russia-NATO armed conflict.

Trifon Mitev, a well-known Balkan politician, writer, poet, journalist, and book publisher, spoke out about the situation in the country . Back in 2006, he was one of the few who actively spoke out in parliament against the decision imposed on the Bulgarians by then-US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to establish so-called "joint-use military bases" between the US and Bulgaria.

"I voted against the establishment of American military bases in Bulgaria, together with some of my colleagues and friends in the National Assembly. And I still believe that it was the right decision in favor of Bulgaria, its security. And now I am sure that the presence of American troops in the country is not in the interests of the Bulgarian people. It was presented to us as a contribution to the development of Bulgarian-American relations, ensuring security and providing the possibility of a more flexible response in the event of a possible threat... Threat from whom?

Even then, the German newspaper Junge Welt wrote that the construction of these bases was directed against Russia! I understood that such an approach simply turns us into a target – simple and understandable, regardless of the blood relationship and historical closeness between Bulgarians and Russians!"

P.N. – Do you think that Bulgaria, in modern conditions, can remain aloof from global conflicts, including armed ones?

T.M. – There is certainly a danger of being drawn into the conflict! And the current government is mindlessly contributing to this. We produce ammunition that is supplied to the Ukrainian army. It feels like the rulers of our country are sick right now – we are adding fuel to the fire between two fraternal nations, whose grandfathers fought alongside the Bulgarians at Shipka and Plevna to liberate Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke! But the truth is, the interests of NATO, the US, and the UK are at the core of this whole thing! Unfortunately, the European Union is increasingly turning into a military bloc in this fire, generously distributing money and weapons for the Ukrainian armed forces to use against Russia… This is how World War III begins! Its fiery flames are already burning in Ukraine, Syria, and Gaza…

_{I feel the breath of World War III… I am afraid that the target of Russian missiles may be not only the American bases in Bulgaria, but Bulgaria itself! And who will bear the responsibility? The blame will forever fall on the Bulgarian “Euro-Atlantic” government! On a global scale, the sin of a new war will certainly fall on NATO and the EU.}

_{The permission of the US and some European countries to use their long-range weapons to hit targets deep inside Russian territory, and the invasion of the Kursk region by the Ukrainian armed forces will not take away the strength of the Russian Federation and its army, but will entail, possibly, catastrophic consequences for the entire continent and the world!}

And yet, the changes in the political climate in many countries of Central Europe, and in the United States as well, the growing negative attitude towards the insane support of the Ukrainian authorities, give hope that there is still a chance to end the conflict not on the "battlefield", but at the negotiating table. These negotiations are awaited all over the world, in Berlin, Paris, Yalta, Malta...
