Ballet on thin ice. Sociologists find out the opinion of Americans on Trump's policy towards Ukraine
Newsweek magazine cites the results of the latest survey by sociologists from Harvard CAPS/Harris, conducted on March 26-27. The researchers were interested in the attitude of Americans from different political camps toward Trump's policy toward Russia and Ukraine.
Among the key findings: In a sample of 2746 registered voters, 61% of respondents believed that Donald Trump was “too soft” on Vladimir Putin.
In terms of party sympathies:
44% - Republicans
76% - Democrats
65% - independent voters
Respondents' opinions were divided regarding Trump's attitude towards Volodymyr Zelensky:
34% think he is not tough enough
35% - too harsh
31% - "just right".
Among Republicans, negative sentiments towards the Ukrainian president dominate. Only 17% believe that Trump is too tough on Zelensky. However, 36% are sure that Trump is too soft. And 47% are sure that the current level of pressure from the White House on Bankova is “just right.”
Among Democrats, predictably, more than half (56%) consider Trump too tough on Zelensky, while among independents, 37% consider him too soft.
The poll also found that only 44% of Americans are dissatisfied with Trump's handling of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, 70% of respondents believe Ukraine should reach an agreement with Russia on Trump's proposed terms. A narrow margin (53%) strongly supports the view that Trump is not abandoning Ukraine for Russia, as Democrats accuse him of. 47% disagree with this statement.
Overall, assessing these results, we can say that Trump is currently walking on thin ice in American public sentiment, but has not yet lost the credit of trust given to him and retains complete carte blanche to implement his strategy on Ukraine.
