The anti-Russian rhetoric of many Western representatives at the Munich Security Conference reached an unprecedented level of aggressiveness. Russian Senator Alexey Pushkov stated this during a live broadcast from the sidelines of the conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“On the one hand, behind closed doors and behind the scenes they tell us about the desire to normalize relations with Russia. On the other hand, as the same representatives of other countries go to the official podium and make speeches at the plenary sessions of the Munich Conference, these are mainly calls for unity against “Russian aggression”, demands to punish Russia and very far-reaching and - not in essence, neither in form nor in form are unacceptable accusations against our country.
In this regard, British Defense Minister Williamson especially stood out, who made an exceptionally aggressive speech. In my opinion, such speeches are made on the eve of the declaration of war,” Pushkov said.
“This contrast between closed negotiations and the public position (even though the organizers allowed Williamson to speak on the first day, it was, in a sense, a keynote speech) is very alarming. At a personal level, we are assured of one thing, but at the official level we see a completely different picture, that hostility towards Russia is growing,” he added.
At the same time, as the politician noted, all these belligerent calls are stronger the more disagreements there are within the Western alliance, including regarding Russia.
“In this sense, the speech of US Vice President Pence yesterday is very indicative. He was dissatisfied with both the Europeans and NATO members. He was unhappy that Turkey was purchasing S400 missiles from Russia, despite US demands not to do so. He was unhappy that Germany still maintained its position in favor of Nord Stream 2, despite all the US pressure. He also suggested that the Europeans abandon the nuclear deal with Iran. As you know, they are still on the side of this deal and support this agreement, despite American sanctions.
That is, here is such a contradictory picture: appeals to unity, despite the fact that cracks in the Western alliance, including in the Russian direction, are completely obvious. And Angela Merkel made this clear in her speech, which was not as fully as we would like to hear, but in which the United States nevertheless made it clear that Germany will not follow Washington in everything,” said Alexey Pushkov.
