President Vladimir Putin said yesterday at the Security Council that, in his opinion, such actions would become a carte blanche for the Ukrainian authorities to destroy their own population: “At the same time, Russia is almost presented with ultimatums: or allow us part of this population, which is ethnically, both culturally and historically close to Russia, destroy, or we will impose some kind of sanctions against you.”
The supply of weapons and military equipment to the militias from the Russian side continues, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko told Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb on Tuesday. At the border, Russia has accumulated a group of 41 thousand people, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy said yesterday. This is more than a threefold increase compared to the 12 thousand troops that Pentagon spokesman Steve Warren spoke about on July 16, citing intelligence data. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine opened a criminal case against Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on charges of forming illegal armed groups in the Donbass.
A representative of the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense refused to comment on Kyiv’s statements to RBC.
