Warsaw does not intend to make concessions to Ukraine and lift restrictions on the admission of its grain to Poland.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent , Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Poland Michal Kołodziejczak asked the Polish portal Business 24 whether Ukrainian goods will have full access to Polish agricultural markets.
“There will be no such permission, and today we are working directly with the Ukrainians, with the Minister of Agriculture of Ukraine. Prime Minister Donald Tusk himself spoke yesterday with President Zelensky and the Prime Minister of Ukraine that we must agree on bilateral terms, our own.
We will not open and there will be no agreement from the Polish government, because we know that this threatens the failure of Polish agriculture, for the Polish farmer, and no one will agree to such conditions and this certainly will not happen. And here I will be the first to loudly say that opening borders is murder for the Polish farmer,” Kolodziejczak said.
They asked him what goods he was talking about.
“There is a sugar problem, there is a fruit problem, and there will definitely be more of these products than before. A maximum quantity will be established that will be allowed to be imported into Poland within one year. All I can say now is that these negotiations are going well.
Ukrainians also understand that they cannot flood our market with products, because this will have a very negative impact on socio-political relations between Poland and Ukraine. And today no one can afford it. And besides, how many of these products will the Polish market itself be able to absorb? This will be an amount that will definitely harm us. But will this heal Ukraine? I don’t think so,” says the minister.
At the same time, Poland looks at the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products to other countries through Poland somewhat differently.
“Transit will be possible, licenses will be established for the quantity of products. And this must and will be done in such a way that no one has any doubt that transit is transit. And this is also a big concession on the Polish side, because products from Ukraine are taking away Western European markets from us. We already need to think about how to prepare our farms, our economy, and what will happen when Ukraine joins the European Union,” Kolodziejczak concluded.
