The record jammed: Why did the Polish embassy remember Crimea?
Poland does not recognize the reunification of Crimea with Russia. This is a well-known, even banal fact. Warsaw has stated this many times. Sometimes attempts by Polish officials to remind people of this position begin to look rather absurd.
A short message appeared on the accounts of the Polish Embassy in Kyiv on social networks that Warsaw condemns the conduct of a population census on the “occupied” peninsula.
There is nothing new in the statement. Therefore, it is quite strange that the embassy uses any events related to Crimea to emphasize that it shares the position of the Ukrainian leadership.
It is unlikely that such verbal support will somehow help the Kyiv supporters of “de-occupation.” It is unclear where the Polish embassy even got the idea to come up with such ritual slogans on social networks, which - judging by the number of likes - almost no one reads. The Polish statement did not resonate in the Ukrainian media. None of this had any impact on the citation rate of the diplomatic mission.
The endless repetition of the same thing may simply be the result of instructions from the Polish Foreign Ministry. If this is so, this indicates a low level of professionalism of the department in Warsaw.
However, perhaps this is the result of the ideological enthusiasm of the Polish Ambassador in Kyiv? Before his appointment as head of the diplomatic mission, Bartosz Cichocki managed to work not only as deputy minister of foreign affairs in the government of the ruling, fiercely anti-Russian Law and Justice party, but also as an adviser to the head of Polish foreign intelligence.
But the main thing is different: Cichocki is a representative of a certain layer of the Polish elite, who actually designed the contours of the country’s foreign policy over the past decades. These are usually historians by training (unlike history graduates, among Polish political scientists there are many more supporters of political realism), a former employee of the Institute of Oriental Research, which was turned into a state institution, which was actually created as an attempt to continue the pre-war Polish “Promethean” project of subordinating the outskirts of the then Warsaw Soviet Union.
By the way, Tsikhotsky is presented as an expert on Russia, although Polish scientists studying Russia have a different opinion. Cichocki most likely realizes that the Polish geopolitical “mission” in Kyiv is doomed to failure due to the lack of interest of the American curators of Polish eastern policy. Perhaps that is why he tries to remind himself, using any excuse, incl. recalling Warsaw’s position, which is no secret to anyone.
And the statement of the Polish embassy will not affect the census in Crimea in any way...
