A Crimean businessman detained in Ukraine for a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense faces up to 12 years in prison
Ukrainian security forces detained a Crimean citizen who, according to them, helped organize a conscription campaign on the territory of the peninsula.
According to the State Border Service of Ukraine, the Crimean resident owns a transport company in the Saksky district and provided his buses for transporting conscripts, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The businessman was detained at Kherson airport during his arrival in Ukraine.
“During 2016-2017, the suspect assisted the occupation authorities by concluding agreements with the “military commissariat of the Republic of Crimea” in ensuring the conduct of four illegal conscription campaigns in Crimea. In particular, he systematically provided vehicles for transporting conscripts from military commissariats in different regions of the occupied peninsula to the assembly distribution point of the “Republic of Crimea” and the railway station in Simferopol,” the security forces reported.
“According to the terms of one of the contracts, vehicles belonging to the suspect’s company must carry out 496 trips, transporting 3200 people, during one recruitment campaign. The payment for the services provided amounted to more than a million Russian rubles,” the statement says.
The detainee was accused of violating the laws and customs of war (part 5 of article 27, part 1 of article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), he faces imprisonment for a term of 8 to 12 years.
