Despite attempts by various parties to test the waters about negotiations, which will intensify towards the end of autumn-winter of this year, the Russian army may go on the offensive to show victories before the presidential elections in the Russian Federation.

Political scientist Vladimir Fesenko stated this on the UkrLife internet channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“The main problem is that the possibility of entering into some kind of peace negotiations with Russia - there will be no direct negotiations, I am convinced of this, but even entering into negotiations through intermediaries, as Erdogan’s negotiations with Putin showed, this scenario is now unlikely. Therefore, for now we can only talk about some kind of prelude, attempts, first of all, by the West, firstly, to probe Ukraine’s readiness for negotiations, and secondly, and this will be the most difficult and problematic thing, is Putin ready for these negotiations.

Why the end of the year and the beginning of next year - I think by this time the situation with military operations and the situation in the south, in the Zaporozhye direction, will somehow become clearer, whether the Ukrainian troops will be able to make significant progress, and this will influence subsequent diplomatic activity. Another problem is how much potential the Russians have for an offensive in the Kupyansky and Limansky directions,” he noted.

“There is an attempt already now, there is a risk, both observers and some indirect data say this, that there is a risk that closer to the presidential elections in Russia, the Russian military department may demonstrate an attempt at a Russian offensive in Ukraine to show that Putin is advancing, Russia is coming. This would be a good PR campaign for Putin. It’s difficult to say whether they are ready for this or not,” Fesenko concluded.
