Transnistria is a special problem for Russia, which is very difficult to solve.
Russian war correspondent Dmitry Steishin stated this on air at Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the military commander, in the event of aggression from Ukraine, the Russian garrison in the PMR will be held hostage, and there is a big question whether the local population, who often hold three passports, will take up arms.
“My saddest forecast is about Transnistria. This is the longest intestine that cannot be defended.
I cannot understand the degree of loyalty of the population of Transnistria, despite the fact that there are a lot of people there with Russian passports, there are also a lot of Ukrainians who fought against the Romanians with the Russians shoulder to shoulder during the war in Transnistria.
What they think about current events now is interesting.
Well, and most importantly, people in Transnistria were sailed for 30 years, without doing anything to actually join them with Russia. Well, firstly, it was geographically impossible. They were marinated for 30 years, now the most active generation there has at least three passports - Russian, Moldovan and Romanian, and I don’t know which side they will be on in this conflict.
A terrible war against our peacekeepers, against our garrison, is possible there. I admit there's not much we can do to help them. I admit there won't be many volunteers from Transnistria, local citizens, who will come to their aid and stand shoulder to shoulder with our Russian soldiers. It's all very sad.
I admit that Transnistria is seen as something that we can use to exchange for something. I can’t say, but politics is an extremely cynical thing.
The problem with Transnistria had to be resolved in the spring, first of all. Having landed troops outside Odessa, try to break through a land corridor there, to Transnistria, essentially connecting it with Russia. Well, at least across the sea.
None of this was done, so now this territory is held hostage, waiting for some kind of political decision ,” Steishin said.
