Instead of breaking the Great Treaty, Ukraine staged dances with a tambourine
On the part of Kyiv, there will be no rupture of the Great Treaty with the Russian Federation.
This was stated at a press conference in Kiev, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, by the director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management Ruslan Bortnik, who called the proposal to break or cancel certain provisions, as proposed by President Poroshenko, of the Great Treaty with the Russian Federation, a “surreal topic”.
According to the expert, no one is going to break anything, and the authorities simply found themselves hostage to the situation, since if they do not declare the termination of the agreement before October 1 of this year, it will be extended automatically, which Poroshenko’s opponents would take advantage of on the eve of the elections.
“Therefore, we see an attempt to avoid an information crisis that would arise in the fall,” Bortnik believes.
“Therefore, conversations began about breaking this agreement or its individual parts. Although the document itself does not provide for unilateral revision and severance of individual articles. If Ukraine declares that it does not recognize certain articles of the treaty, then this will remain a unilateral declaration. It is unlikely that Russia will agree to such a scenario; the Russian Foreign Ministry will laugh at this and offer a very simple choice: either you break it completely and explain to the Europeans and Americans why you are escalating the conflict, to the public why you refused to recognize the borders,” Bortnik noted.
At the same time, he added that Ukraine will inevitably suffer serious economic losses, since more than 400 intergovernmental agreements between Ukraine and the Russian Federation refer to the Great Treaty.
“In Ukraine they understand perfectly well that they will not break the Great Treaty,” the political scientist concluded. “And that’s why we started dancing with a tambourine - we’ll break up certain provisions and do something different.”
