The General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces reported this to Interfax-AVN on Thursday.
“Currently, the 27th mixed aviation division is being formed, the headquarters of which will be in Belbek,” the source noted.
According to him, the concept of mixed in relation to aviation formations implies that the division will include squadrons of fighter, attack, reconnaissance, transport aircraft, front-line bombers, as well as helicopter units.
Until recently, an air regiment of the Russian Air Force was based at the Belbek airfield.
The day before, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that a full-fledged and self-sufficient inter-service group of troops would be formed in Crimea.
“Analysis of possible developments dictates the need to maintain the troops of the Southern Military District in readiness to ensure the military security of the country and its allies in the southwestern strategic direction. In these conditions, one of the priority tasks is the formation of a full-fledged and self-sufficient inter-service group of troops on the Crimean Peninsula,” said the head of the military department.
