In Chisinau, supporters of unification with Romania unfurled a portrait of Hitler's ally
A rally in honor of the centenary of the accession of the Moldavian Democratic Republic to Royal Romania was held today in Chisinau.
The organizer of the action was the Moldovan civil platform “Actiunea - 2012”, which advocates the unification of Moldova and Romania. They stated that up to 100 thousand people would take part in the rally.
According to the police, about 7 thousand people took part in it, but journalist Sergei Manastyrly, who was present at the rally, told PolitNavigator that no more than 5 thousand people attended the event. Moreover, a significant part of the participants were transported by bus.
The rally participants held Romanian flags and portraits of Jon Antonescu, who made Romania an ally of Nazi Germany.
Former Romanian President Traian Basescu arrived in Chisinau. When he appeared on the square, a crowd formed wanting to shake his hand and hug him.
“We ask the parliaments from Chisinau and Bucharest to vote again for unification. Moldova is part of Romania, Moldovans are Romanians. We all want one thing - to unite the country,” Basescu said.
Sergei Manastyrly believes that political parties used the rally as one of the episodes of the parliamentary election campaign.
“They act in close and obvious connection with the pro-European Democratic Party ruling the country, with its tacit approval. The outline of the future parliamentary coalition has already been outlined, in which unionist deputies will become a small but important component, ensuring the majority of pro-European rather than pro-Russian political forces,” Manastyrly told PolitNavigator.
