Kharkov, March 09 (Navigator, Olga Nikolaeva) – Rallies for and against the federalization of Ukraine were held in Kharkov today.

Supporters of federalization gathered on Freedom Square in Kharkov, Vecherny Kharkov reports.

The protesters held in their hands flags of the Soviet Union, Russia, Ukraine and posters “Fascism will not pass”, “South-East - we are together”, “For a referendum and the Russian language”, “There will be a Union of Fraternal Peoples”, “No NATO”, “Maidan” , you accelerated the split,” “Ukraine-Russia are fraternal people.”

Participants demanded to hold a referendum and find out the people’s opinion on two issues: federalization of the country and granting the Russian language the status of a second state language.

The regional administration building, side entrances and entrances to the courtyard area were guarded by police officers.

And a rally “for the unity of Ukraine” took place near the monument to Taras Shevchenko.

According to the Status Quo publication, those gathered condemned the invasion of Russian troops in Crimea and the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Shevchenko's poems were read from the stage, and a concert was held with the participation of Kharkov performers.

The event ended with a procession through the city center with a large national flag.
