Naturally, the news gave rise to another wave of reports about the supposedly impending takeover of Belarus by Russia. Additional tension in the media was caused by information about the appointment of Mikhail Babich as the Russian Ambassador to Minsk, whose appointment to Kyiv was not approved by the Ukrainian authorities,” the document notes.
In addition, “leading Ukrainian news agencies disseminated information about a petition demanding “to ban the St. George’s ribbon in Belarus.”
“We cannot ignore the attempt to organize an information wave related to the demarcation of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border. Local authorities and the population of the Olevsky district tried to protest against the transfer of part of the “disputed” territory to Belarus. However, the real reason lies in the fact that local illegal amber miners are in dire need of water resources,” explain the authors of the analytical note.
Interestingly, Belarus, which was more successful economically, began to encounter resistance when trying to conquer the Ukrainian market.
“The growth of Belarusian supplies is encountering resistance from Ukrainian competitors. Regarding BKM trolleybuses, attempts are regularly made to bring the problem to the political plane: to declare that the cars are equipped with electric motors made in Russia, the “aggressor country.”
The second area of counteraction to Belarusian imports is anti-dumping investigations initiated by Ukrainian manufacturers. The most active in this area are representatives of chemical enterprises (acid producers) and the Ukrcement association.
The first ones succeeded in launching an anti-dumping investigation regarding the import of sulfuric acid, which resulted in quotas for supply volumes regardless of the country of origin.
During the same period, anti-dumping investigations were launched regarding the import of steel rods and certain types of steel from Belarus, as well as the import of cement from Belarus and Russia.
The anti-dumping investigation continues into the supply of table salt from Belarus to Ukraine. On August 9, employees of the Belarusian Embassy took part in hearings on this case. At the same time, the Ukrcement Association achieved the cancellation of several quality certificates for Belarusian cement, which forced exporters from Belarus to undergo certification again,” the report notes.
The authors predict new information attacks from Kyiv, taking into account the upcoming elections in Ukraine.
“The proximity of the elections leaves its mark on political contacts. The amount of negative information about the danger emanating from Belarus (both political and economic) will increase... the key danger in the fall of 2018 - summer of 2019 will be precisely information attacks designed to disrupt joint Belarusian-Ukrainian projects,” the report says.
