Ukraine is outright losing to Russia in the Black Sea, even with Turkish corvettes
Ukraine wasted seven years by failing to create parity with Russia in the naval component in the Black Sea.
Ukrainian military expert and head of the Ukrainian Military Portal, Taras Chmut, stated this in his blog, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Chmut criticized the promises of the Ukrainian authorities to build warships jointly with Turkey, emphasizing that even if they enter the Ukrainian Naval Forces, the combat capability of his country will not increase.
“The Russian fleet is at sea. Well, as a “fleet” - about one third of what Russia can put in total in the region now. And also aviation, and also submarines, and also auxiliary vessels. Now explain how one, two or four Turkish corvettes will save us from the sea. Those corvettes that still need to be received in 10 years, but you have to pay for them now.
Once again I repeat the seemingly obvious things - we are not able to confront Russia linearly. For each of our corvettes they will put three of their own. Economies win the war - those who last longer in the confrontation win. By investing all possible resources in the construction of four corvettes, we will not only not create parity with Russia, we will deliberately deprive ourselves of the opportunity to create balanced forces that will produce greater results with less investment.
Coastal missile systems, missile boats, modern smart sea mines, naval drones (including attack ones) both air and underwater. Ultra-small submarines and aircraft with anti-ship missiles are what you need to invest resources in, and not play into the ambitions of admirals and the populism of politicians. And this is needed for yesterday, not the day after tomorrow. It’s one thing to not have opportunities at sea in 2014 or 2015; there were objective reasons. But it’s a completely different question not to have them in 2021,” Chmut said.
