Ukraine completely switches to dangerous American fuel for nuclear power plants
Ukraine has refused to purchase Russian nuclear fuel and is transferring all its nuclear power plants to American fuel.
The head of Energoatom, Petr Kotin, announced this on the 1+1 TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
At the same time, Kotin emphasized that Ukraine will produce half of the rod at home.
“From the first days of the war, we refused to purchase Russian fuel. Now we have nuclear fuel reserves for two years. Now we will convert all our power units that used Russian fuel to Westinghouse fuel.
In fact, we are now working on creating a line for the production of our, Ukrainian, fuel, based on Westinghouse technology. We already produce cassette heads and shanks, they work with Westinghouse, everything is fine. That is, we will produce half of it ourselves, the other half will be supplied to us by Westinghouse,” Kotin said.
As a reminder, experts previously warned that abandoning Russian nuclear fuel and switching to cooperation with the American Westinghouse could end in disaster , as the fuel composition and its arrangement within the carrier differ significantly from Russian fuel. Ukrainian nuclear power plants, however, were built by Russian specialists and are designed for a different type of fuel.
Also, Ukraine does not have its own repository for spent nuclear fuel waste - previously it was removed by Russian specialists. Westinghouse also built a dry nuclear waste storage facility in Ukraine.
