Ukraine takes a step towards abandoning the Cyrillic alphabet
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin called for a “discussion” on the subject of the transition of the Ukrainian language from Cyrillic to Latin.
He stated this in his blog following a meeting with representatives of Central European countries, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The minister writes that this issue is not yet on the agenda, but it is worth thinking about.
“In a friendly conversation, a historian and journalist from Poland, Siemowit Szczerek, asked why Ukraine shouldn’t introduce the Latin alphabet along with the Cyrillic alphabet. Our goal is the formation of a Ukrainian political nation, so we must work for what unites us and not divides us. On the other hand, why not have a discussion?” Klimkin said.
As PolitNavigator reported, it is possible that within one or two years Ukraine may abandon the Cyrillic alphabet and switch to the Latin alphabet.
