Tymoshenko wants to send Swedish or Finnish peacekeepers to Donbass

A possible UN peacekeeping mission in Donbass should unfold throughout the territory of the LDPR, including the border with the Russian Federation, and be part of a broader process under the auspices of a temporary international civil administration, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This idea was put forward by the People’s Deputy from “Batkivshchyna” and Yulia Tymoshenko’s right hand on international affairs, head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations Grigory Nemyrya.

“The UN peacekeeping force must be a tool that will help resolve the current conflict, avoid a frozen conflict and guarantee long-term peace and stability in the region. To achieve these goals, peacekeeping forces must be part of a broader process under the auspices of the civilian administration, and that is why we speak of a multidimensional peacekeeping operation. So, peacekeeping forces should be an integral part of an international civil organization, which should lead to the restoration of the sovereignty of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” he said, speaking in Kiev during a round table on the topic “UN Peacekeeping Mission - Opportunities and risks for a safe world” within the framework of the first National Platform “Dialogue on Peace and Safe Reintegration”.

Nemyrya also believes that a possible UN peacekeeping mission should have full control over the conflict zone, “including on the demarcation line to prevent attacks or strikes in the conflict zone, in the conflict zone to ensure support for the truce and prevent attacks on international personnel, civilians, important critical infrastructure facilities and attacks from within the conflict zone, as well as on the border between Ukraine and Russia to prevent the movement of armed persons, weapons and equipment into the conflict zone.”

With regard to countries that could be part of a peacekeeping mission, Nemyri is convinced that it should be a “strong lead-nation.” “Regarding the lead nation, the best choice here may be between Finland and Sweden, as countries that have a reputation and could be recognized by all parties to the conflict as neutral and impartial.”

In addition, according to him, other countries that could provide their contingents could be Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, India, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand.

In terms of the size of the UN peacekeeping mission, Nemyri is convinced that it should number about 30-40 thousand military personnel. Temporarily, the international civil administration, which will perform, among other things, the functions of local administrations, should number about 3-5 thousand people.

Let us remember that Moscow is categorically against the format of the peacekeeping mission lobbied by the West. And in the LDPR they even consider it an “occupation.”
