Kyiv, July 30 (Navigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – On the eve of an extraordinary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, the Svoboda party again opposed Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s idea of adopting a law to transfer 49% of the shares of the Ukrainian gas transportation system to the control of EU and US companies.

“Despite the public assurances of Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the bill does not provide any guarantees regarding the loading of the Ukrainian pipeline for the transit of Russian gas to Europe, or the cessation of construction of the Russian South Stream pipeline bypassing Ukraine, or regarding European investments in modernization Ukrainian gas transportation system. Therefore, government calculations about doubling profits from the activities of the GTS if it is handed over to the management of a joint venture is only an assumption,” Svoboda said in a statement.
“The government bill provides that the terms of the agreement on the lease of the Ukrainian gas transportation system and gas storage facilities will be determined by the Cabinet of Ministers. Considering the strategic importance of this agreement for national security, as well as in order to eliminate corruption risks and ensure transparent and competitive conditions for attracting investors, we believe that such contractual terms, at the proposal of the government, should be approved by the Verkhovna Rada, as happens, for example, when the parliament agrees on issues related to a change in the intended purpose of especially valuable lands of state and municipal property,” Oleg Tyagnibok’s party clarifies.
“The transfer of the Ukrainian gas transmission system and underground gas storage facilities to the management of a joint venture, even if the controlling stake in the enterprise remains state-owned, will mean a significant limitation of the government’s influence on resolving a number of issues that are critical to the economic security of the state, in particular ensuring the reversal of gas from EU countries, establishing tariffs for gas transit, conditions for gas supplies to the domestic market, conditions for attracting investments in the modernization of the gas transportation system. The experience of the already carried out corporatization of state-owned monopoly enterprises Ukrnafta and Turboatom shows that the consequence of the adoption of this law may be a complete loss of government influence on gas transportation systems and gas storage facilities and their use to obtain super-profits by Ukrainian and foreign oligarchs,” Svoboda summarizes. .
