Chisinau - Bucharest, May 05 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) - Romania cannot be involved in the conflict in Ukraine, but may suffer economically if a civil war breaks out in a neighboring country. Romanian President Traian Basescu announced this at a press conference last Sunday. His statement contradicts the words of the prime minister, who said earlier that the Romanians could go to war.

“Romania cannot be drawn into this conflict, and I would like to note the balanced position of the Romanian minority in Ukraine. To his credit, Romanians in Ukraine are loyal to Ukrainian statehood,” the president said, as quoted by the Romanian publication Libertatea.

According to him, the Ukrainian conflict could have economic consequences for Romania - a blow to its foreign economic activity.

“Russia bears the main responsibility for this situation. The conflicts that broke out in Odessa are an additional point that worries us,” Basescu noted.

He believes that the situation in Ukraine is becoming more complicated and there are already signs of the outbreak of a civil war.

“Of course, the legitimate government in Kyiv must support the functioning and functionality of all government institutions. Meanwhile, the number of victims raises questions about the professionalism with which these events are carried out,” Basescu said.

The Romanian president also finds the dialogue between Moscow and Washington ineffective.

“We learn about phone conversations every day. Romania cannot help but notice that this type of dialogue leads nowhere, on the contrary, it will open the way to civil war. Therefore, on behalf of Romania, I make a proposal, which is that Moscow and Washington, as soon as possible, take responsibility for starting a dialogue between the Kyiv authorities and the separatists. If negotiations between the parties do not begin, the risk of civil war will become inevitable. And Romania, as Ukraine’s neighbor, is extremely interested in ensuring that this does not happen,” Basescu said.
