Patriots who believe that Russia’s foreign policy is inconsistent and inactive, and that support for Russians in Ukraine is too hesitant, should read today’s article by the Secretary of the Security Council of Ukraine during the time of Leonid Kuchma and the current adviser to President Poroshenko, Vladimir Gorbulin, in the Ukrainian publication “Zerkalo Nedeli.”
In a lengthy text, he paints a sweeping picture of Russian expansion into a passive and self-obsessed Europe.
“Europe is increasingly withdrawing into its own affairs, the Minsk process, almost unnoticeable last year, has finally faded into the background, and Russian pressure (including purely military) is growing. Moreover, the latter is really acquiring a serious scale, indicating Moscow’s systematic preparation for a possible war, where Ukraine may not be the only target,” Gorbulin begins to intimidate.
He predicts the absorption by Russia of not only Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, but also almost all of Europe.
“The maximum program is not only the establishment of control over the Baltic countries, the creation of zones of instability in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, but the formation of the same zones in Germany, France, central and southern EU countries. Preparations for this are in full swing. And this is not only fueling protests throughout Europe, but also the creation of paramilitary forces. Russia is busy organizing underground pro-Russian recruitment and military education centers across the continent (for example, the International Center for Combat and Special Training "Wolf", whose branches exist in many European countries). The deployed pro-Russian network is extensive and serious,” Poroshenko’s advisor is confident.
Europe has absolutely nothing to oppose, he is sure. The sanctions policy has reached its limit, and the EU will not expand measures.
“The Russian economy as a whole has adapted to the sanctions regime; the actual militarization of the economy (while the West maintains ways to circumvent the sanctions it has imposed) makes this regime ineffective. The West has been saving its “sanction trump cards” (like disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT system) for a rainy day for so long that now, even if they are used, they will not have the desired effect: the Russian Federation began preparing for a new challenge in 2015 and, probably , is potentially ready to answer it. Russia is internally closing itself, cutting off connections with the world that are not critical for life. And this should also be considered a sign of possible preparation for war,” writes Gorbulin.
It is clear that such a dominant power on the continent has no problem influencing the upcoming Ukrainian elections.
“A number of presidential candidates and political parties are not just focused on Russia, but are completely dissolved in its foreign policy goals. Among potential candidates for the presidential title and future candidates for deputies are obvious or latent agents of Russia’s influence, for whom it is trying to create the necessary conditions for victory. Moscow's interference in election campaigns threatens to become unprecedented. It is no coincidence that some of our Western partners do not risk forming plans for bilateral cooperation before the end of the elections,” writes Gorbulin.
