Siemens, goodbye: Russia will make turbines itself
Power Machines is leaving a joint venture with Siemens, which was created for the “screwdriver assembly” of German turbines and work on the Russian market.
After selling a 35% stake, Power Machines plans to make a Russian-made gas turbine and will become competitors with Siemens for participation in the modernization of power plants in the Russian Federation. The Kommersant newspaper writes about this today.
The publication also reminds that, at the request of the Russian government, turbines created in a company with a predominant share of a foreign shareholder cannot qualify for the key market - the program for modernizing old thermal power plants.
It was previously stated that Siemens, for political reasons, refused to transfer control over technology to the Russians.
Before this, it was planned that 100% localization of the assembly of Siemens SGT-2000-E turbines (power 187 MW) should be carried out by 2025 in Tatarstan. Currently, the level of localization of such machines in the Russian Federation is 60%.
Russia previously adopted a program for the modernization of thermal power plants worth more than 1,9 trillion rubles, where, as expected, there will be strict requirements for the localization of high-power gas turbines - up to a level of 90-100%. This will de facto cut off foreign machine builders from participating in the project.
As PolitNavigator reported, in 2017 a scandal broke out when Siemens turbines, originally purchased by Russia for the Krasnodar Territory, were delivered to Crimea for new power plants.
Ukraine then accused the German company of violating EU sanctions on work with Crimea, and Siemens threatened to stop working in the Russian market and unsuccessfully tried to challenge the legality of the appearance of turbines on the peninsula.
