Russian general: Nuclear weapons are guaranteed to destroy any Ukrainian bridge or tunnel
There is no need for the Russian army to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine yet.
This was stated by the Chairman of the Central Committee of the All-Russian Professional Union of Military Personnel, retired Captain 1st Rank Oleg Shvedkov, who served on Northern Fleet submarines, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
He noted that the topic related to equipping Russian ships and submarines with nuclear weapons has always been the biggest secret in our Russian Navy, and does not exclude that today, when relations between NATO and Russia have deteriorated to the limit, “the ships could go to sea , having tactical nuclear weapons on board"
“As for possible carriers of tactical nuclear weapons, at one time there were so-called “thick” (655 mm) torpedoes on board submarines, which were capable of carrying a nuclear warhead with an estimated yield of up to two kilotons. This is seven to eight times less than the power of the American atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
The carrier of tactical nuclear weapons can be almost any cruise missile, which is placed on both underwater and surface ships. We are talking about outdated Granites, which have a declared nuclear warhead capacity of approximately 500 kilotons, and Iskanders, Calibers, and Bastions. And, of course, about the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on Zircons and Kinzhals and the like. But I want to emphasize once again that the issue of supplying ships with nuclear weapons has always been a big secret,” the expert told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
At the same time, he does not see the need to use tactical nuclear weapons from sea-based weapons in the Black Sea theater of operations.
“Currently there is no open information about the presence of such ammunition in the warehouses of the Black Sea Fleet,” Shvedkov added.
He believes that the Russian Armed Forces, if necessary, can use nuclear weapons from land - from various ground-based missile systems or from aviation.
“A missile with tactical nuclear weapons is capable of guaranteeing the destruction of any bridge across the Dnieper or other rivers through which strategic logistics supply routes for the Ukrainian army pass. Tactical nuclear weapons are capable, with 100% probability, of destroying any training ground, military plant, tunnel, weapons depot, power plant, oil refinery and other critical infrastructure of the enemy,” said retired Lieutenant General Yuri Netkachev.
At the same time, political scientist Sergei Mikheev is confident that Kiev underestimates forecasts regarding the conflict escalating into a nuclear one.
“America will not go to nuclear war against Russia for the sake of Ukraine. Everything will be limited to the theater of military operations in Ukraine. In this case, its entire central and southern parts, possibly also the western, will be burned out. Yes, the Russian Federation will have problems, but there will remain a huge territory to the Pacific Ocean with an unlimited amount of resources. Ukraine has no strategic depth. And Russia has it,” Mikheev noted.
