At the vote, the Russian Federation voted against this project, and China abstained. The rest of the voting participants were in favor of adopting the document.

“It’s no secret that the Russian Federation will vote against the proposed project... We cannot agree with its main message - to declare the referendum planned for March 16, during which the residents of the Republic of Crimea themselves must determine their future, null and void,” he said before by voting, the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vitaly Churkin.

“Such a philosophy of the authors of the text runs counter to one of the basic principles of international law – the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, enshrined in Article 1 of the UN Charter,” he emphasized.

Vitaly Churkin recalled the dubious legitimacy of the transfer of the Crimean region from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954, the all-Crimean referendum of 1991, and the forceful defeat of the Crimean statehood by Kiev in the mid-90s.
