Confrontation is inevitable: Georgian opposition presents ultimatum and gathers regions
The radical Georgian opposition is tightening its demands. This time she organized a rally with more specific demands for the resignation of the government.
Moreover, the opposition comes up with a well-considered proposal to create a so-called “technical government” that will:
a) “adjust” Georgia to the standards of a candidate for EU membership presented by the Europeans,
b) hold early elections.
Ukrainian President Zelensky made a speech from a huge screen specially mounted in front of the Georgian Parliament building. Thanking the Georgian militants fighting in the Donbass against the Russians, Zelensky urged not to forget about South Ossetia and Abkhazia. He generously promised to support Georgia, cast as an “outsider,” on the path to integration into the EU.
Meanwhile, the organizers of the action declared their readiness to create a government of people's trust - everything indicates a determination to go to the end.
The Georgian authorities are given a week's time (until July 3) to dismiss the “pro-Russian” government. Actions are planned according to the scheme of the super-successful “Rose Revolution” twenty years ago.
In particular, the opposition, having toured the regions until July 3, together with an army of its supporters, intends to return to Tbilisi to organize permanent crowded resistance near the parliament building until the demands it made to the country’s authorities are fulfilled.
A new round of political crisis is caused by the European Union's decision not to grant Georgia candidate status for EU membership. The situation is complicated by the acquisition of status by Ukraine and Moldova, although European “partners” have always emphasized the leadership of the Caucasian state along the path of integration into the EU.
Before this, EU leaders, one after another, emphasized their dissatisfaction with the insufficient efforts of the Georgian government to support the West in the confrontation with Russia. Just then, problems with “democracy” and “freedom of speech” appeared, the arrest of Saakashvili and Gvaramia (a significant figure, ideologist of the far-right liberal opposition) was criticized, and so on.
By taking the opposition under its protection, on the one hand, and on the other, presenting demands to the Georgian authorities for the “democratization” of society, similar to an outright ultimatum, the EU is pushing the republic towards internal political destabilization.
For example, in the listed “homework assignments” for obtaining candidate status, the first number is “depolarization” of society with simultaneous “deoligarchization,” meaning by the latter the neutralization of the influence of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili. Indeed, being the informal leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Ivanishivli plays a cementing role for the current government, which will inevitably collapse, having lost its “core”.
“Depolarization” is impossible while “Dream” remains in power, which will not aggravate the situation with Russia.
And the main goal of the upcoming political “mess” is precisely the active inclusion of Georgia in the general anti-Russian front.
The very provision of a six-month period for Georgia to complete the above-mentioned tasks is due, rather, not to favor towards it and the desire to see it worthy of the status of a candidate for EU membership, but to the intent to assist the opposition in preparing a successful anti-government coup.
For the latter, all preconditions have been prepared: the creation of a broad platform of “popular resistance” has been announced, discord among the opposition has been extinguished, influential liberal NGOs have been mobilized, the support of the ombudsman and the country’s president has been ensured (which is important for legalizing possible unrest), and large-scale information support has been provided to the media.
In the approaching acute phase of the confrontation, the population is unlikely to defend the ruling “Dream” with all its might, although it has previously supported it more than once at critical moments. Dissatisfaction with the dire social situation is clearly manifested in the frequent protests of independent trade unions and various social groups here and there.
How the police and other security agencies will behave is also unclear. During Saakashvili's time, they were in a much more privileged position than now. This also applies to the bureaucracy - the whole army of civil servants.
And one more important factor. Young people, especially students, have been completely taken over by the “Soros” front – universities have been under its total control for decades.
It was clear to the naked eye that it was young people who were the main part of the protesters at the latest rallies, and in the center of the capital the opposition had already twice managed to gather over fifty thousand people, which is a considerable number for Tbilisi.
Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has already stated that he is not going to resign under any circumstances, but is going to defend his government and resolutely rebuff attempts to destabilize the situation.
In recent hours, attacks on Garibashvili have intensified sharply. Being the most hated head of government for the pro-American opposition, he was also accused of contacts with the former Minister of State Security of Georgia, General Igor Georgadze - “the most dangerous pro-Russian politician” who has been in exile since 1995.
Everything indicates that Georgia will once again face difficult trials.
