Trump's opponents say his chances of re-election are high
The current US President Donald Trump has a fairly high chance of being re-elected to a second term.
This was stated in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “Novoe Vremya” by the former US Ambassador to Ukraine, professor at the Institute of International Relations at Stanford University, Steven Pifer, answering the question of what are Trump’s chances of winning the presidential election again.
“These odds are too high for me to feel comfortable [laughs]. Much depends on the Democrats - who they nominate as a presidential candidate. The right Democratic candidate can handle and ultimately defeat Trump. The question is whether such a candidate will emerge. Democrats should remember that Trump's victory in the 2016 election occurred because Democrats lost support in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa. These voters must be returned if the democratic candidate wants to win the elections,” the diplomat said.
According to him, the main candidates for the Democratic nomination are former Vice President Joe Biden and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.
“The logic of the Democrats should be this: not to think about who is the better politician - Biden or Warren, but to calculate which of them has a more realistic chance of defeating Trump. From what Warren is saying, she's going to push the Democratic platform to the left, losing some voters. Yes, moving left excites a certain part of the Democratic electorate, but this comes at the expense of losing votes that will go to Trump. That's some tough political math that Democrats need to figure out for 2020,” Pifer says.
