Forecast: The West is heading towards a “cold war” on two fronts
Russia and China, experiencing a crisis in relations with Western countries, can conclude a mutual assistance agreement.
This was reported by PolitNavigator correspondent and written about in Nezavisimaya Gazeta by orientalist and head of the expert council of the Russian-Chinese Committee for Friendship, Peace, and Development, Yuri Tavrovsky.
“Now the US-China Cold War has acquired all three main components on both sides - economic, military and ideological. It has become irreversible. At the same time, the new Cold War has not yet acquired global proportions and has not become a confrontation between blocs or associations of powerful countries. But this may well happen quite soon,” the author believes.
In his opinion, Washington is capable of creating an anti-Chinese “Alliance of Democracies” in the foreseeable future.
“Secondly, Beijing and Moscow can conclude some kind of agreement on mutual assistance, clarifying and developing the relevant articles of the current Russian-Chinese Treaty of 2001. The simultaneous escalation of the Cold War against both Russia and China could overcome the well-known caution towards a military-political alliance that has persisted in both capitals since the Sino-Soviet Cold War of the 1960s–1980s,” the publication notes.
The author emphasizes that it is still too early to judge to what extent American strategists understand the adverse consequences of simultaneously waging two cold wars at once - both with Russia and with China.
“But they must remember how the two-front wars ended for Germany and Japan during World War II. We should not forget about one important reason for America’s victory in the First World Cold War. Moscow was forced to simultaneously spend resources to repel the onslaught from both the West and the East. But we can already state: humanity is steadily moving towards the Second World Cold War,” sums up Tavrovsky.
