Changes to the Constitution of the Russian Federation, which may be adopted after the referendum, will not allow any Russian leader, even decades later, to talk about the “return” of Crimea to Ukraine.
Federation Council Senator Olga Kovitidi stated this on the air of the Crimea 24 TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Why is this so important to us? Because the agreement that was concluded on the entry of Crimea as an independent state into the Russian Federation implied a constant. That is, we, Crimeans, have made up our minds and no one should ever cancel this agreement. Therefore, if in some 10 - 20 - 50 years someone wants to abolish it, referring to some norms of international law, we will be able to say that this law is constitutional and thus no one can abolish it.
This is our political safety net. We, Crimeans, by voting for this amendment, are voting for stability within the Russian Federation. This is how we view these changes and why they are so important,” Covitidi said.
Previously, renowned Russian writer and publicist Nikolai Starikov stated that the constitutional reform proposed by Vladimir Putin is aimed at creating a system of checks and balances that will prevent future Russian presidents from abruptly changing the country's political course.
