The conflict in Ukraine has shown that inexpensive drones are more effective, which should gradually replace high-tech ships, planes and other equipment.
Former US Secretary of the Navy and former US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ray Mabus stated this on the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics' video blog, PolitNavigator reports.
“What you've seen with Ukraine, what you've seen in many conflicts where Ukraine is most prominent, I mean Ukraine because it doesn't have a navy, defeats the Russian navy. The country, which has no navy, has pushed the Russian Black Sea Fleet off the coast due to unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned surface vehicles.
I think the Navy is starting to move in this direction, I think they need to speed up the process. In future conflicts, you will need many more unmanned platforms in the air, underwater, on land. To do this, you will have to use artificial intelligence and swarm technologies. You'll be in space, using networked and non-networked devices in ways we've never had to do before,” Mabus reasoned.
He also called for abandoning the creation of high-tech and expensive ships and submarines in favor of cheaper drones:
“If you really have large losses and there are places where we are reluctant to send aircraft carriers today because of the danger of flooding, you basically cannot do something like that, you have to be prepared for this - well, ships sink in battle, in battle, planes are shot down. If you have unmanned ships or unmanned aircraft underwater, these are acceptable losses. They can be replaced without losing pilots, submariners or ship drivers.”
