After the launch of Nord Stream 2, the Ukrainian gas transmission system will be cut into scrap metal
After the launch of Nord Stream 2, transit volumes through the Ukrainian gas transportation system will decrease below the level of profitability, which will make its operation impractical.
Valentin Zemlyansky, director of energy programs at the Center for World Economy and International Relations of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, announced this at a press conference in Kyiv, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“On April 24, Gazprom, Mr. Miller, announced that pumping volumes through the Ukrainian gas transportation system could decrease to 15 billion cubic meters. This is absolutely below cost, it will cancel the Ukrainian GTS as a gas transit business.
The minimum volume of transit that allows you to maintain the system and operate without a loss is 60 billion cubic meters per year. That is, the Ukrainian gas transportation system in the form in which we know it and in which it operates will simply be unprofitable. Something will need to be done with it to reduce costs.
Last year we already heard a statement from the head of Ukrtrnagaz that 30% of compressors could already be taken out of service - because they are simply not used. It is clear that if transit decreases by almost 9 times, this number will increase significantly.
We will talk about the fact that we no longer need money for the modernization of the gas transportation system, but for its conservation. This is the best case scenario. At worst, we have extensive experience in dismantling, cutting into scrap metal enterprises, and the industrial potential of the country.
I think the same thing could happen to the Ukrainian gas transportation system – it will simply be cut into metal,” says the expert.
