The time has come for Poland to apologize to Jews, Slavs and the whole world
Against the backdrop of ongoing attempts to denigrate the feat of the liberating soldiers of World War II on the part of a number of European countries, the issue of protecting historical memory must be taken under special control.
This was stated by Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin, opening the first meeting of the spring session, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It has always been important for us that history is not rewritten, the truth about the war is not distorted. There are facts that do not change. But today we see how politicians in a number of countries are doing everything to distort them, to rewrite history in their own interests. This is unacceptable,” Volodin said.
He also advised members of the Polish Sejm not to denigrate the memory of the soldiers-liberators of World War II in attempts to rewrite history.
“The leaders of modern Poland, before making statements, need to know at what cost freedom was won for the Polish people. At the cost of half a million dead Soviet soldiers and officers,” said the speaker of parliament.
He emphasized that Poland should apologize both for its current behavior on the world stage and for its predecessors.
“It was in Poland that hundreds of concentration camps and death camps were located, where Jews, Slavs, and prisoners of war of other nationalities were purposefully exterminated.
This was largely facilitated by the pre-war atmosphere in Poland and the position of the leadership of this country, which fueled anti-Semitic sentiments in society, creating the ground for the subsequent genocide, the Holocaust.
For this, the current leadership of Poland must apologize to the Jews and the whole world,” Volodin said.
In addition, according to him, it is necessary to jointly address the issue of protecting historical memory.
“It would be right for the Committees on International Affairs, Education and Science, Culture, CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, as well as our delegations to PACE, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and other inter-parliamentary structures to consider the issue of protecting historical memory a priority in their work “Vyacheslav Volodin emphasized.
