Klimkin’s ward was struck by the change in Russia’s tone in the negotiations on Naval Forces sailors
The Russian delegation changed its tone at the negotiations on the fate of the Ukrainian Navy crews who participated in the provocation with an attempt to break through the Russian border near the Kerch Strait.
This was reported by Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Lana Zerkal, commenting on the results of today’s “exchange of views”, which took place in The Hague on the eve of the hearings at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. They are expected to take place on May 6-7 in Hamburg.

“I was struck by the radical change in the tone of the conversation - the transition from rudeness and gross disregard to civilized speech inherent in diplomacy. It is unknown whether this is a change in Russian tactics or a simple desire to delay the consultation process,” the Ukrainian official said in amazement.
Mirror did not put forward the version that the change in tone may be associated with a change of power in Ukraine - the new President Vladimir Zelensky, as responsible for foreign policy, must form his own Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where, obviously, neither Mirror nor its boss Pavel Klimkin may be present.
Zelensky, as is known, stated that he considers the release of Ukrainian Naval Forces crews one of his priorities.
Zerkal itself states that Kyiv still demands that the Russian Federation recognize the allegedly illegal detention of border violators even before the start of the trial.
“Russia has the opportunity to voluntarily release Ukrainian sailors and warships and eliminate violations of international law,” the official said.
