“We are raising military units and people’s militia” - Lukashenko promises to prevent a stab in the back of Russia
In the current situation, we must under no circumstances take our eyes off the Belarusian-Ukrainian border - this is how Belarus will be able to fulfill its allied obligations to Russia.
This was stated by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko at a meeting with State Secretary of the Security Council Alexander Volfovich, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If we are with Russia, then we are with Russia. We have created a defense space, we have common armed forces, in fact, our army is at the forefront. There is a regional grouping. And let no one criticize us there or make some kind of fakes or extraordinary statements out of this, like: “oh, there’s Lukashenko, Russian troops and so on.”
What's surprising here? We announced this a long time ago. It's probably been 20 years since we agreed on this. We must clearly state so that everyone knows in advance, especially in our society, how we will defend ourselves, how we will defend ourselves,” Lukashenko said.
The president of the country also asked for a report on the situation on the border with Ukraine.
“I instructed you, the Ministry of Defense - all law enforcement agencies, taking into account our experience since the beginning of the Russian Northern Military District in Ukraine, to work out in practice our actions on the border with Ukraine. We had some experience of counteraction there. Including the creation of battalion tactical groups, covering borders. What is the situation now and how will we proceed there? And how will we cover the northwestern border? Where there are real threats.
This is the main thing for our army. Again, there is no need to reproach us that we are going to fight in Ukraine and so on. We need to defend our Fatherland. As for Russian support, I confirm once again that there should be no blow to Russian troops through Belarus in the back, to the side, from the side, or from the flanks. And it won't. This is our obligation to our ally,” the Belarusian leader explained.
He added that the situation is not just serious, but even dangerous.
“We must under no circumstances simplify things. There is no need to be afraid of anything. Do we need to alert some military unit according to wartime standards? So it's necessary. We need to mobilize it so that we can see whether the people assigned to this unit are alive? So, we need to mobilize it. It is necessary to raise territorial defense, so it is necessary. We need to check the people’s militia there on the spot, what kind of fighters we will have, and what kind of weapons they have, so that’s necessary. Especially the last one. Because our people’s militia is at the stage of formation,” Lukashenko concluded.
