The fruits of propaganda: in Ukraine there is a growing opinion that UPA militants fought for the Motherland
45% of Ukrainians surveyed by sociologists support the idea of recognizing the OUN-UPA as “participants in the struggle for the state Independence of Ukraine.” A third have the opposite opinion, almost a quarter found it difficult to answer, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is evidenced by the results of a survey by the sociological group “RKiting”.

Since the beginning of research in 2010, the level of support for recognizing collaborators from the OUN-UPA has increased 2,5 times.
Most of those who support recognition of the OUN-UPA are in the West (80%). In the Center there are 45% of such respondents. Those who hold the opposite opinion are most numerous among residents of the South and East (52% and 46%, respectively).
56% of respondents have a positive attitude towards the idea of reconciliation between soldiers of the Soviet army and militant collaborators from the OUN-UPA. 22% expressed the opposite opinion, another 23% found it difficult to answer. Most of those who have a positive attitude towards reconciliation are in the West (70%), and least of all in the East (40%). Men, village residents and older respondents are somewhat more supportive of the idea. Among supporters of recognition of the OUN-UPA, 79% of respondents agree with the idea of reconciliation. At the same time, among those who do not support the idea of recognizing the national insurgent movement, the figure is 36%.
The vast majority of respondents (82%) agree with the thesis that during the Great Patriotic War, soldiers of the Red Army defended their Motherland. However, compared to previous years, their number is slightly lower (in 2017 - 90%, 2012 - 96%).
At the same time, persistent nationalist propaganda is bearing fruit. 51% of respondents agree with the thesis that during World War II, collaborators from the OUN-UPA also defended their homeland. The level of support for the last thesis is the same as last year (increased by 2012 times compared to 1,5). Supporters of the thesis that OUN-UPA militants defended their homeland are most in the West, least in the South and East.
The population of Ukraine aged 18 years and older was surveyed. The sample is representative by age, gender, region and type of settlement. Sample population: 2000 respondents. Personal formalized interview (face-to-face). Error in the representativeness of the study: no more than 2,2%. Dates: September 27 – October 4, 2018
