Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute for Policy Analysis and Management , stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent . He noted that the so-called "Chumak ultimatum"—a statement made Thursday in the Verkhovna Rada by deputies representing several factions and groups—has not received adequate coverage in the Ukrainian media.

The expert emphasized that the statement addressed to Speaker Parubiy demanded the adoption of five laws that relate to electoral legislation, as well as the creation of a temporary investigative commission and the impeachment of the president.

“This may mean a new round of political confrontation, since the authors of the statement promise that if Parubiy does not submit these bills for consideration in the near future, then in May they will provoke direct action, as they call it, and most likely, large-scale social and political protests . This ultimatum was actually delivered not to Parubiy, but to the president. Thus, deputies are trying to create an impeachment procedure for the president and election legislation, that is, those things that are potentially very dangerous for the president,” the political scientist said.

“All this could lead to serious political consequences as early as May, to an aggravation of political confrontation, as well as the initiation of early parliamentary elections. This is an important and underestimated statement by the media, a little trampled, it seems to me, by the presidential administration. This means that there is already some kind of common alliance and a common vision of opposition and sub-opposition structures in relation to political processes. This means that they feel the president’s weakness, especially given the fact that they forced him to impose a blockade and concede on the gas license fee. Perhaps this confrontation will move from behind the scenes to a more open form,” Bortnik does not rule out.
