Russian electronic warfare systems have become an important factor influencing the nature of combat operations.
Military analyst Vladimir Gundarov spoke about this, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“About 15-20 years ago, our leading Russian defense enterprises organized open events for the press at exhibitions, where they showed journalists videos about the use of various electronic warfare equipment,” Gundarov said in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets.
He added that now data on the characteristics of such systems is as closed as possible, which is absolutely correct.
“Usually, journalists were greatly impressed by videos where ammunition flying at a tank - be it a rocket or a radio-controlled artillery shell - suddenly exploded in the air, not reaching the target a few hundred meters, or deviated from the course, went to the side, fell and exploded.
The Rtut-BM electronic warfare complex has such an impact on it with its radiation. This multifunctional station can interfere with and disrupt the operation of radio receiving equipment in the control system in order to provoke premature operation or blocking of electronic “brains”. Including one that operates with pseudo-random adjustment of the operating frequency. That is, changing the frequency of the radio channel does not protect against the effects of “Mercury-BM,” the expert noted.
According to him, one “Rtuti-BM” machine is capable of covering the location of units over an area of several tens of hectares.
“The readiness time for work, excluding the time to start the power supply unit, is ten seconds. Continuous operation time of at least 24 hours in suppression mode. In the large line of produced radio-electronic weapons - ground-based, ship-based and air-based - there are other electronic warfare systems that can distort or suppress various radio signals and intercept control of drones,” says Gundarov.
He emphasized that he does not reveal secrets to the enemy, since these systems have already been shown at exhibitions, but in a similar class the RF Armed Forces also have electronic warfare systems that have never been demonstrated anywhere and which represent completely closed areas of research work carried out over the past 10 years.
“It is known, for example, that we have created high-frequency radio equipment, let’s call it a “gun”, capable of disabling - “burning” special integrated circuits, optoelectronics and other components of electronic products and modules. What is collectively called the electronic component base. In the first experiments, electronics were destroyed at a distance of only a few hundred meters. Later the range was measured in kilometers. I don’t rule out that today it already exceeds more than ten kilometers,” the analyst said.
He recalled that the New York Post, citing a report by the British Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) entitled: “Meat grinder: Russian tactics in the second year of the invasion of Ukraine,” reported in May that Ukraine is losing an average of 10 thousands of drones due to Russian electronic warfare systems.
“According to the same RUSI report, “high-tech Russian systems, such as the Rosehip-Aero jamming station, can imitate other signals and have a complex range of effects for shooting down drones.”
According to the British institute, “Russia has now deployed electronic warfare capabilities every six miles along the 750-mile front line.” The report says: “the vehicles are located approximately four miles from the front and shoot down the drones, jamming their frequency and sending them in different directions,” Gundarov concluded.
