New music: why it captivates us so much

Many of us regularly discover new songs and new artists

What effect does listening to a new piece of music have on the human brain? If you don’t delve into the essence of the question, you can answer that nothing. But in reality this is far from the case. According to Canadian scientists, when a person listens to a new song, and even if it is just a musical composition without words, areas of the brain that are associated with pleasure are immediately excited.

It's also worth noting that the resource offers music collections, such as "new songs" and "popular," as well as catalogs of songs by genre.

Facts about listening to new music

First of all, it's worth mentioning that people don't always readily accept new music. According to psychologists, human musical perception is a very conservative thing. The fact is that new music doesn't appeal to everyone; many prefer pieces they're already familiar with. In fact, we truly relate to the music we're used to, the music we've been listening to for a long time. For example, we might listen to something new for entertainment or to get acquainted, but we can't fully appreciate it.

It is also worth highlighting other facts:

• The situation is the same with classics. In this case, there is also a subconscious rejection of everything unfamiliar. But here we are no longer talking about style and not about some kind of work, but about the canons of the time when this music was written. Due to some misunderstanding, we may refuse to listen to classical works;
• why do people need new music? – primarily because the social principle is at work here. That is, people listen to compositions that others listen to and treat it as something familiar;
• changes in musical works in the 21st century - now most composers dictate their terms to listeners and try to shape tastes. At the same time, when creating creations, they always use something familiar. Thus, innovative songs quickly become popular and trending.

All musical compositions, including new ones, have their own strength.

Music and anatomy

The benefits of listening to melodies close to your heart are difficult to overestimate. While listening to songs, a large release of happiness hormones occurs in the body, for example, dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin. That is, the degree of sympathy for the song determines the amount of all these and other hormones. And if you like the composition and there is a release of hormones, it will stay with you for a long time. This is a simple and affordable way to find happiness.

And all this, which is important, happens not only in youth. Even if a person is over 40 years old and he hears a good song, it can quickly become his favorite and cause a strong reaction in the body.

What the research says

The main results of one of the studies by Canadian experts are as follows: new music is the lot of teenagers. After 30 years of age, interest in new music begins to gradually decline, and by the age of 37, most listeners practically disappear; they like the songs of their youth more, because they contain a lot of memories and experiences.
