The preliminary amount of damage caused by Ukraine to Crimea has been announced
Crimea supported the proposal by State Duma Speaker Vladislav Volodin to bill Ukraine for the losses the peninsula has suffered over the 25 years of Ukrainian independence.
Russian senator from Crimea Sergei Tsekov stated this in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda.
"Finally assessing this damage—that's been a long-standing proposal from Crimeans , from residents, from State Council deputies . It's time to turn the tables . After all, it was Ukraine that annexed Crimea in 1991! Under Soviet law, we were never allowed to vote in a referendum on the peninsula's ownership during the collapse of the Union," Tsekov said.
He also named what was built in Crimea from 1991 to 2014.
"One Ukrainian gymnasium. The road from Belbek airfield to Foros—because Ukrainian presidents used to fly to Belbek, and they vacationed in Foros. The Dzhankoy - Kerch gas pipeline . You can count them on the fingers of one hand (not counting the palaces on the coast)," the politician explained.
He added that during this same period, large agricultural enterprises and infrastructure fell into complete disrepair, and many roads had not been repaired since the Soviet era.
"The power grids and power plants weren't reconstructed or modernized. Kindergartens, schools, and community centers were falling into disrepair—up to half of them in rural areas... They treated us like foreign territory with a population opposed to Kyiv . That's why they just plundered land along the sea—and they're still reselling it," the senator stated.
At the same time, he noted, over the past five years, 15 new places have been added to Crimean kindergartens, a bridge, an airport, the Tavrida highway , new thermal power plants have been built, and hospitals and clinics continue to open .
“And what happened on their part during this time was the blocking of the North Crimean Canal, the undermining of power lines and the cessation of the supply of both water and electricity to Crimea,” the senator emphasized.
In his opinion, the damage could be estimated at hundreds of billions of rubles.
“If you calculate it in currency, I believe it will be at least 10 billion dollars. These are the losses that Crimea suffered under Ukraine,” Tsekov clarified.
