The Ukrainian government traded Crimea for its positions in Kyiv during the "Russian Spring" of 2014. Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this on the NewsOne television channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

According to him, the winners of Maidan needed time to gain a foothold in the government offices, and resistance in Crimea could lead to the loss of the entire country for them.

“I think that to some extent Crimea was exchanged for power in Kyiv. We know the transcript of the work of the National Security and Defense Council, we know that the Russian leadership called the Ukrainian leadership at that time. And there was a choice - either fight for Crimea, or expect a possible Russian invasion or Russian influence in Kyiv.

It was such a simple choice for the Ukrainian authorities, and they, by and large, exchanged it for power in Kiev... It was a kind of political exchange, when both sides puffed out their cheeks, took such serious and threatening poses, but no one really did anything about it so that Crimea remains part of Ukraine,” Bortnik said.
