In Ukraine they suspected treacherous “zrada” from NATO
The President of the Russian Federation, during negotiations with the President of the United States, clearly outlined red lines for Ukraine, which the Americans did not even object to.
One of the organizers of the rally “For a United Ukraine” in 2014, Enrique Menendez, who subsequently fled the DPR, stated this on the Nash TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Even Jens Stolteberg, who is known for his rather harsh hawkish statements, what did he say? He said we wouldn't compromise on security, but he didn't say we wouldn't compromise on membership.
After all, what interests us as Ukrainians? Security, and they sell us NATO membership, but this does not guarantee security. On the contrary, given Russia’s position, which has become publicly available, they voiced it - this means that for them this is a clear red line.
I think that Putin would never have publicly voiced Russia’s position if he had known that the Americans, again, would publicly answer him uncompromisingly: “no.” Because for him it would be a diplomatic disgrace. This means that they agreed on something,” Menendez lamented.
