President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko risks repeating the fate of ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, “cultivating” nationalists in order to make Russia more accommodating in economic disputes.
Russian political scientist Nikolai Platoshkin stated this on the YouTube channel " PolitCafe, " as reported by a correspondent for "PolitNavigator."
"Unfortunately, in my opinion, Lukashenko has recently been flirting with the nationalist opposition to scare us ( Russia – editor's note ). Yanukovych did the same. He seemed to be telling us, 'Don't want to deal with me? Look, there's Samopomich and Banderovites in Lviv.' Even though they were financed by Yanukovych's administration at the time. They were a bogeyman against us, which later brought him down. And this Yanukovych is in Rostov, not Washington," the expert noted.
If Alexander Lukashenko continues to “flirt” with Belarusian nationalists, he may face the fate of Yanukovych, and Belarus the fate of Ukraine, the analyst warns.
“Lukashenko is making the same mistake. In order to somehow discipline us, he began to flirt with the nationalist opposition in Belarus, which, unlike Ukraine, did not really exist there.
Those who have been to Belarus can say that the population there mainly speaks Russian and so on. But I notice: in bookstores in Minsk everything is completely different. Previously, there was the Great Patriotic War, the Brest Fortress, everything was as it should be. Now “Belarus is the heir of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania,” that Belarusians are not Russians, that on the territory of Belarus there was a “Russian-French war against Napoleon.”
In Ukraine it all started with the same nasty thing. Therefore, Lukashenko must understand that if something happens, these animals, which he is trying to somehow raise and flirt with, will demolish him. And no one except Russia will provide him with asylum,” the political scientist concluded.
