As noted, the court made a decision to conduct a special pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings against Zhirinovsky and two other deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Federation on September 18, 2018.

According to Ukrainian special forces, Zhirinovsky “in March-April 2014, while in Moscow, to provide material support for the D/LPR militants,” he created and headed an organized group, which included individual deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Federation and members of the LDPR. In particular, during this period, Russian deputies called on Russian citizens to raise funds for militants in Donbass, and also posted relevant announcements on the party’s websites. In addition, they opened points in the Russian Federation to collect appropriate funds, and also entered into an agreement regarding the material support of the “DPR” and provided the “DPR” militants with premises in Moscow for “representative activities.”

According to the GPU, “at the expense of personally contributed property and funds, as well as funds collected from citizens of the Russian Federation, Russian deputies under the leadership of Zhirinovsky, at the request of the head of the terrorist group “Somalia” Mikhail Tolstykh (call sign “Givi”), during 2014- 2017 provided the militants with six Russian-made vehicles with increased passage and operational capabilities.” It is noted that these vehicles were “used by militias during terrorist attacks against military and law enforcement units of Ukraine,” in particular on the territory of the Donetsk airport.

Based on these facts, in August 2017 and June 2018, the GPU drew up a report of suspicion against Zhirinovsky and two other Russian deputies under Part 3 of Art. 27 hours 3 tbsp. 258-5 (financing of terrorism) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. In Ukraine, they face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

In addition, the Prosecutor General’s Office adds that in accordance with the sanctions of the EU, Canada, Australia and Switzerland introduced in 2014, Zhirinovsky’s assets in these countries are frozen, and he is also prohibited from entering these countries. Ukraine has also imposed sanctions on Zhirinovsky, his assets have been frozen and he has been banned from entry.
