We lost! – recognition from Kyiv
The US failed to stop Nord Stream 2, and Ukraine's position on this issue has proven to be a losing one. Political scientist Alexey Yakubin stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“It may well be that this Munich conference may be the last for the people who participated in the Normandy format - Merkel in the status of chancellor and Poroshenko in the status that he has now.
It would be logical if we saw a breakthrough in these issues, but, on the contrary, on Merkel’s part we saw an attempt at a very European approach to relations with Russia in the context of the fact that Nord Stream 2 will be built sooner and later. This is due to Europe's desire to abandon coal and nuclear power.
Our government lost the round with Nord Stream. There was a bet on the United States that, by promoting the idea of liquefied gas, they would help Ukraine, but, as we see, it does not work out that way.
The United States continues to pursue its interests while intimidating Europe with possible sanctions. On our part, it was a losing option to bet on the United States.
During the Cold War, the USSR built a gas pipeline, which we still have, and the United States also tried to impose sanctions, but then it all disappeared.
Europe believes that this can be considered as a precedent - it is possible to build Nord Stream 2, and our position was wrong. Most likely, a transit contract after 2019 will be much more difficult to obtain than if we took a more constructive position,” the speaker said.
