A recent operation by Kosovo special forces in the northern regions of the province, populated by Serbs, has demonstrated the need for more effective legal protection for Kosovo Serbs.

“UN Resolution No. 1244 works well in the part that guarantees the integrity of the Republic of Serbia, that is, the impossibility of seizing Kosovo without the approval of Belgrade. But in the part that protects the rights of Serbs in Kosovo, the resolution has long been morally outdated. It is replete with bureaucratic loopholes that allow Kosovo Albanians to do whatever they want. It is beneficial to those forces in Serbia who advocate maintaining the status quo on the Kosovo issue,” the expert notes.

According to him, for Kosovo Serbs this resolution is “something like a suitcase without a handle - it’s impossible to drag it and it’s a shame to throw it away.”

“Meanwhile, the aggressive actions of Albanians in northern Kosovo indicate the need for more effective legal protection for Kosovo Serbs. A document that would replace Resolution No. 1244, of course, should be the fruit of collective international efforts, discussed at the UN Security Council with the active participation of Russia. Then the Kosovo Serbs will have a chance,” Bondarev sums up.

Let us recall that UN Security Council Resolution No. 1999, adopted in 1244, defined steps to resolve the Kosovo crisis, emphasizing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yugoslavia along with the provision of significant autonomy for Kosovo.
