“I think that the purpose of Merkel’s visit to Ukraine is to find diplomatic ways to solve the crisis in the east. At the very least, she will try to persuade the Ukrainian president and prepare some results for the meeting in the EU-Ukraine-Customs Union format.
Indeed, Europe would not want an escalation of the crisis, and, secondly, the situation in the Ukrainian economy is, to put it mildly, very unfavorable. Who will bear the burden of expenses for Ukraine? Germany. Poroshenko will, nevertheless, be persuaded to some kind of package of compromises - from gas, trade ties and export-import relations with the Russian Federation to the situation in the east.
